Regulation:

There is no oversight board for homeschooling in Texas. This means there is no one to notify that you plan to homeschool and no one to register with. There are no forms needed to get started. Unless your family has a special circumstance, you don't need to document anything, like attendance, grades, etc., though you can if you like to. And there is no required testing.

Special circumstances might include: wards of the state, youth involved with the court system, shared custody, or minors receiving benefits. The best information on these situations can be found through the Texas Homeschool Coalition.

Homeschool Laws in Texas:

Texas Unschoolers has the most thorough compilation of homeschool laws for Texas here. The most commonly cited of these is the Leeper case, which states:

  • The instruction must be bona fide (i.e., not a sham).

  • The curriculum must be in visual form (e.g., books, workbooks, video monitor).

  • The curriculum must include the five basic subjects of reading, spelling, grammar, mathematics, and good citizenship.
